Summary of Events

The merchants of Damascus and Aleppo have responded to the call for a general strike for the second day in protest of the regime’s continued crimes.

Assad’s forces killed today a family of 15 members and field-executed 3 others in the town of Khan Sheikhoun in the province of Idlib. They also shot at the UN observers’ convoy as they tried to enter the town to investigate the crimes.

Assad’s forces killed more than 72 people across the country today; 11 fell in the province of Homs as regime forces continued its military offensive against the old city of Homs and its neighbourhoods of Jobar, Sultaniya, Baba Amr, Talbiseh, Qosur, Qarabis, Jouret Sheyah and the suburbs of Rastan, Qasir and Qalaat Hoson, 12 in the province of Hama mostly in the village of Twini, 10 in the province of Deir Azzour, nine in the suburbs of Damascus including a woman in the town of Thiyabiya and two children in the town of Madaya died under the heavy shelling, 18 in the province of Idlib as the regime continues its military campaign against the towns of Khan Sheikhoun, Tamana, Hass and Al-Sheih, three in Aleppo suburb of Ezaz, two in the Latakia suburb of Rabea, two in Damascus, and one in the city of Aleppo.

The regime’s violations continued across the country as its forces shelled the Aleppo suburbs of Kafarhalab, Sheikh Ali, Qabtan Jabal, Ezaz, Bayanoun, Kafarnaya, Daret Ezza, Deir Jamal, Hayan and Atareb, the Damascus suburbs of Deir Asafir, Zabdin, Harasta, Douma, Zabadani, Madaya, Qatana and Zamalka, the city of Daraa, its neighbourhoods of Mahatta, the refugee camp, and the towns of Karak Sharqi, Om Walad, Ghariya Gharbiya, Othman, Naima, Bosra, Herak, and Ma’ardeh in the province of Daraa, the villages of Salma and Dwerein in the province of Latakia, the towns of Mayadin, Mohasan, Bo’omar, Baqros, Tayana, Baloum and the neighbourhoods of Joura, Mosbaq Sono’ and Mowathafin in the province of Homs.

Heavy skirmishes were reported near Abbasiyin Square and in the neighbourhoods of Adawy and Qosur in the capital after news of a mass defection among the Republican Guard elite. Similar defections were reported in the city of Daraa, Hasaka and Idlib. The rebels announced that they seized control of the Aleppo suburb of Deir Jamal.

The revolutionary council in the province of Daraa voiced its fears that the regime is planning a new massacre against Daraa’s stronghold town of Lujat as it mobilized more than 70 military tanks to the 36th brigade to launch a massive military offensive against it.

United Nations special envoy Kofi Annan arrived in Damascus for talks with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. His visit comes the day after he admitted that the international efforts to stem the bloodshed have failed.
