Summary of Events

Several reports indicate that the Jordanian government started sending back Syrian refugees to Syria on its own expense, while deporting the affluent ones on their own expense to their country of choice. The deportation process does not take into consideration the danger they may be subjected to upon arrival in Syria. The process started after Syrians fled Lebanon due to the threats spread by Hezbollah loyalists.

Regime forces killed at least 56 people today; 17 were killed in the province of Latakia as regime forces shelled the city of Haffeh and the nearby villages of Dafeel and Salma. The shelling triggered a series of defections within military units which caused massive clashes that stopped regime militias from entering the residential areas. Residents have been calling upon the UN observers to visit their areas fearing an imminent massacre. As for the province of Hama, 13 were killed by the Syrian army as it shelled the towns of Latamna and Kafarzeita with helicopters, as well as the towns of Sahel al-Ghab and Jabal Shahshabo with artillery while the town of Mardes was subjected to heavy fire.

The regime’s violations to Annan’s peace plan continued, as the Syrian army shelled the cities of Qasir and Homs and the villages of Salumiya and Osh al-Warwar and raided the town of Qaryatain while conducting arbitrary arrests and sweeps. Regime forces also shelled the town of Hayan and the village of Qubtan al-Jabal in the province of Aleppo with artillery as well as the city of Ezaz with helicopters. They opened heavy fire in the city of Idlib, the city of Deir Azzour, the town of Tafas, and Ghariya Gharbiya. Additionally, Assad’s forces shelled the city of Maaret Noman and Ariha, and the towns of Muhasan, Lajat, and Ghabagheb.

In the capital, regime forces opened heavy fire in the neighbourhoods of Jobar and Zuhoor while heavy fire and explosions were heard in the neighbourhoods of Qabun, Baghdad, Abbasiyeen, Jobar, Rukn Adin and Qassa. Regime forces also opened heavy fire in the Damascus suburbs of Saqba and Marba, raided and conducted arbitrary arrests and sweeps in the suburbs of Mqailbiya, and shelled the suburbs of Zabadani, Harasta, Daraya, Douma and Hamouriya.

An explosive device was found in the Science Faculty in the University of Aleppo, while students held a sit-in in the Architectural Engineering faculty which soon turned to a massive demonstration calling for the release of detainees.
