Summary of Events

The Syrian Army shot down a Turkish warplane on the Syrian Turkish borders. According to the Turkish government, the pilots are alive and Damascus has extended an official apology for shooting down the plane.

Regime forces killed at least 87 on this Friday which witnessed hundreds of demonstrations across the country; 27 in the province of Deir Azzour as regime forces opened fire at demonstrations in the city of Boukamal and shelled the city of Deir Azzour, 17 in the province of Aleppo as regime forces opened fire at demonstrations in the neighbourhoods of Tariq al-Bab and Salahdin in the city of Aleppo while shelling the city of Ezaz, 13 in the province of Homs as the Syrian army shelled the cities of Homs and Houleh; 13 in the capital, and eight in the province of Daraa as regime forces opened fire at demonstrations in the Sabil neighbourhood in the city of Daraa while shelling the towns of Bosr Harir, Mahaja, and Lajat.

The regime’s violations across the country continued as its forces conducted arbitrary arrests and sweeps that reached hundreds in the city of Hama, opened fire at demonstrations in the neighbourhood of Slaibeh in the city of Latakia, raided the villages of Memtana and Jibba in the province of Qoneitra amid arbitrary arrests and sweeps, and shelled the city of Maaret Noman and the villages of Kafar Sajna, Rejaya, Madaya, Maaret Harma, Hbait, Sheikh Mustafa and Jabal Shahshabo in the province of Idlib.

In the capital, regime forces besieged the neighbourhoods of Barzeh, Tadamon, Nahar Aisha, Qabun, and Jobar and opened fire at demonstrations in the Yarmouk camp and neighbourhood of Mazzeh. Regime forces also shelled the suburbs of Zabadani, Douma, Harasta and Rankous, and opened fire in the suburbs of Moadamiya, Qatana, Daraya, and Hama.

Kofi Annan called for increasing the pressure on the regime and the opposition to enable the resumption of the UN observers’ mission. Meanwhile, UN Mission Director, Robert Mood, stated that increasing the number of observers or arming them will not improve conditions in Syria.
