Summary of Events
The general strike in Damascus continued and spread to the city of Aleppo and suburbs of Damascus, as businesses shut down in the neighbourhoods of al-Bab and Shaar in the city of Aleppo and the Damascus suburbs of Jesrain, Harasta, Kafarbatna, Hamouriya, Erbin, and Saqba. Regime forces tried to end the strike by threatening owners and opening fire at commercial establishments but did not succeed.
UN observers visited the city of Hama and the town of Kafarzeita and met up with demonstrators and revolutionaries. Regime forces raided the areas visited by the observers amid heavy fire and shelling after they left.
Assad’s forces killed at least 33 civilians today; 12 fell in the province of Aleppo as the Syrian army shelled the cities of Qaryatain, Rastan, and Houleh, and the neighbourhoods of Baba Amr, Jobar, and Sultaniya in the city of Homs, and eight in the province of Idlib as regime forces shelled the towns of Ariha and Kafar Aweid, and opened heavy fire in the village of Bedama.
The regime’s violations to Annan’s peace plan continued as it shelled the village of Terdin and the city of Jabal al-Akrad in the province of Latakia, raided the towns of Heet and Nawa amid heavy fire, shelled the town of Ikhtreen with military helicopters and the cities of Ezaz and Atareb with artillery and tanks in the province of Aleppo. It also shelled the towns of Shahil and Quriya, and the village of Qibariya. Heavy fire targeted the neighbourhood of Takaya in the city of Deir Azzour, in addition to arbitrary arrests and sweeps in the neighbourhoods of Bab Qabli, Sheikh Anbar, Tawuniya, and Jalla in the city of Hama.
In the capital, regime forces opened heavy fire in the neighbourhoods of Jobar, Qabun and Barzeh, while heavy sporadic fire was heard in the areas of al-Abed, Arnous, Zabaltani and Qoshour in central Damascus, with reported clashes between revolutionaries and regime forces in al-Abbasiyeen areas. Regime forces also shelled the suburbs of Daraya, Douma, Misraba, Harasta, Malaiha and Zamalka.
