Regime Improvises More Explosions in Aleppo

Summary of Events

The Assad regime’s attempts at misleading the UN observers continued as it improvised another explosion in the city of Aleppo at the Baath Party headquarters. On the other hand, state television announced that a bus carrying 1200 kg of explosives, enough to kill 500 people, was intercepted after an army officer tipped the authorities; the officer has not divulged his source of information. UN observers have inspected the intercepted bus and explosives.

UN observers carried on their duties in the country, as they visited the town of Tal Kalakh in the province of Homs. Meanwhile, the Assad regime continued to violate the ceasefire as its forces conducted arbitrary arrests and sweeps campaign in the cities of Boukamal and Mayadin and invaded the town of Muhasan in the province of Deir Azzour. It also shelled the village of Terdeen in the province of Latakia, shelled and opened heavy fire in the towns of Malaiha Sharqiya, Malaiha Gharbiya, Dael and Jiza in the province of Daraa, and raided the neighbourhood of Sakhour in the city of Aleppo and shelled the town of Atareb.

Assad’s forces killed at least 22 people today; six in the province of Hama as the army shelled the neighbourhoods of Kazo and Sheikh Anbar as well as the town of Kafarnabouda, four in the province of Homs as regime forces opened heavy fire in the cities of Homs, Rastan and Qasir, and four in the province of Idlib as army units shelled the villages of Kherbet Jouz, Deir Sanbal, and Ferkaya, and opened heavy fire in the town of Ariha and Jeser Shoghour. A land mine went off close by refugees who tried to cross into Turkey to escape the regime’s operations in Idlib.

In the capital, regime forces opened heavy fire in the neighbourhood of Jobar and conducted arbitrary arrests and sweeps in the neighbourhood of Shaghour. It also opened heavy fire in the suburbs of Jedeidet Artouz, Nashabiya, Sayida Zainab, Zabadani, and Harasta, and conducted arbitrary arrests and sweeps in the suburbs of Erbin, Douma, and Aqraba amid heavy fire, and shelling of the suburbs of Qtaifa and Aqraba.

The EU announced it will be sending 25 armoured personnel carriers to Syria to support the UN observers work in monitoring the ceasefire.
