Regime Prepares for Another Massacre in Homs

Summary of Events

The Syrian army intensified its shelling of the city of Homs with missiles and artillery while amassing its troops to invade the besieged areas. Opposition sources inside announced that the city is undergoing the heaviest preliminary shelling it has ever experienced, while more than a hundred tanks have been amassed in preparation for a full scale invasion.

Turkey accused the regime of intentionally shooting down its airplane in international airspace using a guided missile and not an AA gun. Turkey announced that the regime has opened fire on another airplane scouting for the remains of the first one. Turkey added it will protect itself and has filed an official request to NATO to convene.

Regime forces killed at least 80 people today; 20 fell in the province of Daraa as a result of the shelling in the towns of Bosra Sham, Marba, Kafar Shams, Sheyah, and Shomra, and the refugee camp in the city of Daraa, 17 in the city of Deir Azzour as the shelling continued, 11 in the province of Idlib as the Syrian army shelled the towns of Ariha, Saraqeb, Jabal Zawiya, and Maaret Noman, and the village of Deir Sanbal, and ten in the province of Homs as the shelling intensified on the cities of Homs and Talbiseh.

The regime’s operations continued throughout the country as its forces shelled the town of Qalat Madiq in the province of Hama and raided the city of Halfaya amid heavy fire. It also shelled the cities of Hayan and Atareb in the province of Aleppo and the suburbs of New Aleppo as well. In the capital, several explosions were heard in the central neighbourhoods while regime forces raided the suburbs of Daraya and Moadamiya under the cover of heavy fire, and continued to shell the suburbs Misraba, Damir, Douma and Erbin.

Lawyers in the city of Aleppo held a sit-in at the Central Court in protest to the regime’s crimes. Students also held a sit-in at the Economics faculty of Damascus University to which security personnel retorted by opening fire. Meanwhile, the town of Slouk in the province of Raqa underwent a general strike in solidarity with the city of Deir Azzour.

The EU imposed new sanctions on the regime targeting more individuals and companies. This 16th batch of sanctions increases the number of sanctioned individuals to 120 and companies and committees to 50.
