Summary of Events

The Assad regime continued to massacre civilians by randomly shelling entire cities with artillery and missiles. The shelling recently intensified which led to the levelling of entire cities and towns and the displacement of tens of thousands. In the province of Aleppo, the siege and heavy shelling of the cities of Hayan, Indan and Atareb led to a massive exodus, while the town of Heraytan was shelled long enough to allow the regime’s militiamen to enter the city, torch houses with residents inside, slaughter women and children, and target fleeing civilians with snipers. The shelling also continued and intensified in the Damascus suburb of Douma, the towns of Lajat and Bosr Harir in the province of Daraa, and the cities of Homs, Rastan, Tal Kalakh, Houleh, and Qasir in the province of Homs.

Opposition sources announced that the regime is escalating its deployment of chemical weapons, as these weapons were used in the town of Lajat in the province of Daraa, the Damascus suburb of Rankous, the Jabal Zawiya area in the province of Idlib, and in the neighbourhood of Baba Amr in the city of Homs.

Regime forces shelled the area where UN observers are residing at in the city of Daraa. Meanwhile, a group of observers visited the city of Haffeh in the province of Latakia and found it deserted and torched after the heavy shelling led to the exodus of the majority of its 25,000 residents.

Regime forces killed at least 60 people today; 19 fell in the province of Homs due to the heavy shelling, and 19 in the suburbs of Damascus, of which nine were slaughtered by knives by regime militiamen in the suburb of Hamouriya.

The regime’s violations continued as it shelled the city of Ezaz in the province of Aleppo, the village of Deir Sanbal and the city of Idlib, and opened heavy fire in the cities of Boukamal and Deir Azzour. In the capital, regime forces opened heavy fire in the neighbourhoods of Jobar, Kafarsouseh and Hajar Aswad, while heavy clashes took place in the suburbs of Ain Tarma, Harasta, and Erbin due to the regime’s raids. They also raided the suburb of Saqba, and continued to shell the suburbs of Zabadani, Zamalka, Erbin and Assal Wared.

The regime circulated new bank notes printed by the Russian public sector enterprise Goznak to relieve the financial deficit that put the payment of many governmental expenses and salaries on hold. The circulation of unbacked new bank notes should contribute to the inflation that has reached levels higher than 30%.
