Summary of Events

The highest rates of defections within the ranks of the Syrian Army have been registered this week, as the numbers of defectors reached hundreds in the province of Idlib and the city of Homs. Furthermore, the defection of a strategic air defence battalion armed with anti-air and anti-tanks missiles was just announced. The battalion joined the ranks of the revolutionaries in the cities of Rastan and Talbiseh.

UN observers visited the city of Banyas in the province of Tartous and headed over to the local security headquarters where they met the local security figureheads.

Regime forces killed at least 66 people today; 26 fell in the province of Homs as the Syrian army shelled the cities of Rastan, Houleh, Talbiseh, Qasir and Homs, and six in the province of Latakia as the shelling continued in the city of Haffeh and surrounding villages.

The regime’s violations to Annan’s peace plan continued, as its forces shelled the city of Maaret Noman in the province of Daraa, the village of Ruz, the town of Karnaz in the province of Hama, the town of Inkhel in Daraa, the cities and towns of Hayan, Marea, Indan, Ibbeen, Jeena, Atareb, Kafar Halab, and Kafar Kameen in the province of Aleppo. Assad’s forces opened heavy fire in the cities of Deir Azzour, Boukamal, Mayadin, and the towns of Dael and Kafarshams in the province of Daraa. They also raided the neighbourhood of Qabun and the suburbs of Harasta and Douma in the capital, and invaded the town of Othman.

The Syrian government granted permission for the private sector to import oil products. Private businessmen have been importing gas a few months ago via Lebanese imports.
