Summary of Events

The Syrian National Council announced that the Assad regime planted numerous explosive cars to be detonated near churches and monasteries in several Syrian cities, such as Damascus and Aleppo. The regime aims to blame terrorist attacks on radical groups to justify and cover up its violence. It also seeks to create a distraction away from the ban on any funeral procession for Basel Shehada, the photographer who was shot by regime snipers in Homs. Regime forces besieged the funeral procession site, assaulted visitors, and rallied its armed supporters in front of the church and the house where the funeral procession was supposed to take place.

Regime media outlets announced that the Free Syrian Army acquired chemical and biological weapons. Announcements of such nature usually come as precursors to regime actions, which mean the regime will probably attack cities using chemical weapons and blame it on revolutionaries. The regime has used chemical weapons in the past in the cities of Rastan and Homs with Iranian and Russian supervision.

UN observers visited the neighbourhood of Sheikh Alwan in the city of Hama where they attended a massive demonstration calling for the fall of the regime. Meanwhile, the regime’s crimes against civilians continued as it killed at least 43 today; 13 fell in the capital including four in the Damascus suburb of Hamouriya who were field-executed, eight in Homs and nine in Deir Azzour that were killed as a result of the heavy shelling of residential areas and heavy firing at demonstrators.

Assad’s violations to Annan’s plan continued as his forces shelled the cities of Atareb, Homs, Talbiseh, Rastan, Tal Kalakh, and the town of Tesil in the province of Daraa, opened heavy fire at demonstrators in the city of Aleppo, the towns of Kafar Shams, al-Hara, and Nawa, and raided the town of Ain Moussa in the province of Raqa after defections took place.

In the capital, regime forces opened heavy fire at demonstrators in the neighbourhoods of Mazeh, Nahar Aisha, Jobar, and Qabun. They also shelled the suburbs of Daraya, Douma and Malaiha, and opened heavy fire in the suburbs of Hjaira, Aqraba, Buwaida, Moadamiya, and Qatana.

The US accused Russia of continuing to arm the regime in light of the recent Russian cargo ship that unloaded weapons in the port of Tartous. Russia denied its support of any party in Syria.
