Summary of Events
Two days following the Houleh massacre, the Assad regime committed another massacre in Hama as it shelled and raided the city killing more than 50 civilians. The shelling intensified in residential areas of the neighbourhoods of Arbaeen, Qosur, Janoub al-Malaab, Fraya, and Hader. The shelling was in response to operations undertaken by revolutionaries in the city that targeted most frontier bases of the regime after the Houleh massacre, killing hundreds of regime forces, destroying around a dozen of armoured units, and facilitating the defection of more than one hundred soldiers. The UNSC has condemned the regime and demanded the withdrawal of all heavy weaponry from cities. UNSC observers’ Mission Director, Robert Mood, announced that at least 116 were killed and more than 300 were injured in Houleh. Mood added that his team is unarmed and will not be able to stop the violence nor monitor all Syrian cities.
Regime forces shelled the cities of Ezaz and Atareb along with surrounding areas with its Air Force, artillery and AA guns. The shelling came in response to the take over of a bus that carried Hezbollah units north of Aleppo. The faction responsible for the kidnapping has not been confirmed, as evidence point towards regime forces and revolutionaries alike.
The Damascus uprising in response to the Houleh massacre continued, as demonstrations and strikes broke out in the neighbourhoods of Tadamon, Wadi Masharee, Qaber Atkeh, Nahar Aisha, Maidan, Barzeh, Jeser al-Abyad, and Hajar al-Aswad and the regime forces responded with heavy fire. They also shelled the suburbs of Douma, Kesweh, Daraya, Moadamiya, and opened heavy fire in the suburbs of Malaiha and Kafarbatna.
The regime’s violations to Annan’s peace plan continued, as its forces shelled the villages of Jousiye and Nizariye, the cities of Houleh, Qasir, Tal Kalakh, and Homs. They also opened heavy fire in the city of Boukamal in the province of Deir Azzour and the towns of Ibtaa and Sheikh Meskin, shelled the village of Mestreeha in the province of Hama, the town of Sarmada, Jasem, and Tafas, and raided the village of Balshon in the province of Idlib and the village of al-Udwan.
Regime forces killed at least 66 people today; 50 fell in the city of Hama’s massacre, and nine at demonstrations in the capital Damascus.
