Summary of Events
The Assad regime announced that it foiled a terrorist attack in Deir Azzour, as it hindered the detonation of an armed car. The regime also announced that it intercepted a car carrying 600 kg of explosives in the capital. The regime has been trying to convince the international community of the presence of terrorist cells in Syria, and it seems it is succeeding despite the poor planning and the mounting evidence of its involvement. UN secretary general Ban Ki Moon said that he thinks al-Qaeda might be responsible for last week’s attacks in Damascus. Meanwhile, UN observers carried on their monitoring mission, as mission director Robert Mood announced that peace is still attainable.
The regime continued violate Annan’s peace agreement without regard to statements demanding it to comply or to the presence of UN observers, as its forces killed at least 27 today; nine fell in Homs as the Syrian army shelled the neighbourhoods of Deir Baalba, Sultaniya and Jobar, and seven in the province of Idlib as regime forces shelled the village of Balaa and the town of Sermada, and opened heavy fire in the village of Orum al-Jouz and the city of Idlib.
Tens of thousands of Syrians went out in peaceful demonstrations in solidarity with the students of Aleppo University who continued daily demonstrations and sit-ins despite the intensive crackdown. Regime forces, as usual, retorted with violence by opening heavy fire in the towns of Atareb and Mannegh in the province of Aleppo. It also opened heavy fire in the town of Dael, torched many houses, and conducted arbitrary arrests in the town of Jassem in the province of Daraa. Furthermore, it conducted arbitrary sweeps accompanied by heavy firing in the cities of Hama and Salamiya in the province of Hama, and opened heavy fire at demonstrators in the cities of Boukamal and Mayadin in the province of Deir Azzour.
In the capital, regime forces conducted arbitrary arrests in the neighbourhood of Shaghour and opened heavy fire at demonstrators in the neighbourhoods of Qabun, Nahar Aisha, Maidan, Tadamon, Mazeh and Jobar. Forces also raided the suburbs of Sahem and Daraya amid heavy fire, shelled the suburb of Hamuriya, and opened heavy fire in the suburb of Douma.
Meanwhile, demonstrations continued in the city of Latakia despite the violence specifically targeting the Sunni population. Pro-Assad Alawites in the city refuse to sell food, medicine, gasoline to Sunnis, persist in cutting off the supplies of water and electricity, kidnap women and minors wearing head veils to rape them, and arrest Sunni men and children arbitrarily at checkpoints.
